Altamira Coffee Pub is the best of the best that Atenas has to offer. This cozy coffee pub makes you feel comfortable on a hot day or warm and dry on a rainy day. Altamira serves up genuine Costa Rican coffee, sandwiches, unbelievable deserts or simply some candy coated coco beans to tease the palette.

What is Altamira?
Altamira is about Costa Rican hospitality. You enter as strangers and leave as friends.
So why do they call it a Coffee Pub?
They don't just serve coffee they also have a wide variety of handmade cocktails and craft beers on their menu. This includes sangria, wine, house drinks AND there very own beer...Altamira Coffee Porter. This was my favorite!
Don't confuse Altamira with a bar or your local pub. The cozy atmosphere is a perfect place to take in the "best climate of the world" and just relax. Have a sandwich or choose one of their many desert selections. If you have things to do on the internet or you "work from home" or you just want to meet up with friends and have a conversation you'll enjoy this place.

Please excuse this lengthy review but it is well deserved. We love Costa Rica. We've been several times and twice in 2021-2022. Each time we find something new and special about a town, place or especially the people. This time was no different. Altamira Coffe Pub with Javier, Sharon, Paula, Michael, Lewis and Javier's father was that place and they were those people. The Coffe Pub is so calming and relaxing but it's Javier and the staff that make it so special. Their hospitality is the best we've had in CR. In fact, it was so good that we when there nearly every day that we were in Atenas. The only days we didnt go was Monday when they we closed and a day we decided to go exploring for the day. That was 7 of 9 days. We always like to promote local Costa Rican run businesses and their Coffe Pub is on the top of that list. Besides the incredible hospitality they also serve Costa Rican grown coffee (believe it or not is not always that common at coffe shops), sanwiches, deserts, pastries, various relaxing cocktails and local beer; especially their very own house beer, Altamira Coffee Porter. It's delicious, trust me!
But back to the real topic. Javier and the group are simply amazing! They answered any questions we had, gave us advice on just about everything we needed to know and each time we walked in they greeted us with a big smile, handshake or a hug. They really are what is so special about Costa Rica!

Local, Inspiring, Fantastic
Costa Rica's Finest Example of Great Cuisine
Located in the small village of San Jose Sur just above Atenas is the elegant and quaint El Jardin Restaurante. It's a small restaurant and no you don't have to be dressed to the nines to eat there. The atmosphere makes it feel elegant and the food makes you think that you just ate at a James Beard Chef's kitchen. Of course, once again you top the hospitality of the Costa Rican people. Our meals were, taken, cooked, delivered and with nothing but a smile and a laugh. We've eaten at some really good restaurant living 2.5 hours from Charleston, SC. I would put the Chef of El Jardin up against any of them. He even came out to our table to make sure we were pleased with our meal and if there was anything we needed. I can't speak of him but it really appeared that he loves what he does. Just looking at the pride and happiness in his face gave you sense of joy as you took a bite of his culinary skills.
The restaurant isn't hard to find and it's maybe 3 miles from city center just up the hill. This is a must stop if you are staying in or around Atenas or Grecia area.
